Solastalgia:

Ellen H. Ray + Cathie Kayser + Heather L. Johanson + Cindee Klement + Renata Lucia

The word “Solastalgia” was coined by philosopher Glenn Albrecht, known for his work in psychoterratic' mental health conditions. It refers to the distress and emotional impact caused by environmental changes experienced in one’s home environment, and can be extended to mean the suffering caused by the collective severing of the relationship between humanity and the natural planet on which we live. The Solastalgia exhibition addressed critical environmental issues, especially those impacting the greater Houston area, such as the Brio Superfund site, Houston’s proximity to and the ecological effects of the petrochemical industry, the disappearance of local species, and more. The exhibition was an invitation to contemplation and an effort to ignite an interest in viewers to reflect on humanity’s relationship with the environment.

  • Curated by Ellen H. Ray and Cathie Kayser, artists include Cathie Kayser, Heather L. Johnson, Cindee Klement, Renata Lucia, and Ellen H. Ray. We used traditional printmaking, drawing, painting, sculpture, and photographic and videographic, and experimental installation techniques to make the work.
